Trump commands disassembly of Department of Education
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at dismantling the Department of Education, accusing it of wasting taxpayer money and promoting "progressive social experiments." Established in 1979, the department oversees education, grants, student aid, and enforces anti-discrimination policies in federally funded schools. Trump has long criticized it for being wasteful and politically driven.
On Thursday, Trump directed Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to take the necessary steps to close the department and return education control to states and local communities. The order claims that eliminating the department will allow families to "escape a system that is failing them."
The White House highlighted the decline in mathematics and reading scores in public schools, despite a significant increase in per-student spending since the 1970s. It argued that more spending has not translated into better educational outcomes, and taxpayer funds would no longer support "progressive social experiments and outdated programs."
Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt clarified that the department would remain much smaller, continuing to manage student loans and federal Pell Grants. This move is part of a broader initiative led by Elon Musk’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ (DOGE) to reduce government spending and bureaucracy. The Department of Education employed approximately 4,200 people as of September, and McMahon recently announced a plan to reduce its workforce by nearly half.
