Trump plans on patrolling DC streets

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced he will patrol the streets of Washington DC alongside police and the National Guard as part of a new federal crackdown on crime in the capital. Last week, Trump invoked the 1973 Home Rule Act, declaring a public safety emergency that placed the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and deployed up to 800 military personnel to assist law enforcement.

“I’m going out tonight with the police and the military,” Trump told radio host Todd Starnes, praising the National Guard’s efforts. He cited rising crime rates in the city, including a 2024 homicide rate of 27.54 per 100,000 residents, calling the situation “complete and total lawlessness” and pledging to restore safety.

The move has drawn strong criticism from DC leaders. Mayor Muriel Bowser described it as “unsettling and unprecedented,” and Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit claiming Trump exceeded his legal authority. A Washington Post poll shows nearly 80% of city residents oppose the federal takeover, with many reporting they feel less safe.

Since the federal intervention, Attorney General Pamela Bondi reported 630 arrests, emphasizing the ongoing effort to “make DC safe again.” However, the MPD had previously reported a 35% drop in violent crime in 2024, prompting the Department of Justice to investigate possible falsification of crime statistics.
