Czech leader considers joining peacekeeping in Ukraine
(MENAFN) The Czech Republic should consider taking part in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, President Petr Pavel said Thursday.
Participating in a future mission would be "appropriate" given the country’s active involvement in the peace process, Pavel told a Czech media organisation, as reported by Radio Prague International. He added that the level of Czech engagement would depend on the terms of any agreement.
Pavel also indicated that territorial concessions in Ukraine might be necessary to achieve a settlement, even if they conflict with international law.
Such concessions, he explained, reflect the realities on the battlefield. “If the war is not to drag on for years with increasing casualties and destruction, a temporary loss of territory is the lesser evil,” Pavel said.
