Syria enforces temporary curfew following fatal security incidents

(MENAFN) Syrian authorities have introduced a short-term curfew in the coastal city of Latakia in northwestern Syria after a series of violent security incidents that resulted in casualties, as stated by officials.

According to an official announcement, the Internal Security Command ordered the restriction to take effect at 5 p.m. local time on Tuesday and to remain in force until 6 a.m. on Wednesday. The measure applies across the city, with exceptions granted for emergency situations, including medical staff, ambulance services, and firefighting teams. Residents were instructed to adhere strictly to the order and cooperate with security forces, with warnings that any violations would lead to legal consequences.

An Interior Ministry spokesperson said authorities would not tolerate unlawful or reckless behavior under any circumstances, stressing the state’s responsibility to safeguard all citizens through the rule of law and official institutions. He urged Latakia residents to respect legal boundaries and avoid conduct that could threaten public safety or social cohesion, including incitement, irresponsible individual actions, or following groups seeking to spread disorder and instability.

The spokesperson also emphasized that the state rejects any form of vandalism or attacks against civilians or their property, describing such actions as clear breaches of the law that will be addressed through legal procedures. “Individual mistakes cannot be generalized or used to justify further violations,” he said, according to official statements.

The curfew was imposed in the aftermath of armed attacks targeting security forces who were deployed to protect demonstrations held on Sunday in several coastal and central cities. The protests, organized by an Alawite religious authority, included calls for federalism.

Officials said the violence left four people dead and injured 108 others, including both security personnel and civilians, in Latakia.
