Kobacker program moves to Ohio’s Hospice in landmark partnership preserving future of quality nonprofit end-of-life care

The new Kobacker House will be located at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

COLUMBUS, OH, UNITED STATES, January 7, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Kobacker family today announced that Kobacker House, central Ohio’s pioneering inpatient hospice facility founded in 1989, will move and continue its mission under Ohio’s Hospice, the state’s largest nonprofit hospice provider.

As part of the announcement, the family published a guiding charter, The Kobacker Way, which details fundamental principles for quality nonprofit hospice care. The full document is available at www.TheKobackerWay.org.

The first location for the new Kobacker House will be at Ohio’s Hospice’s existing operations within University Hospital at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The Kobacker House Foundation and Ohio’s Hospice plan to eventually bring The Kobacker Way to the organization’s seven dedicated inpatient hospice facilities, which include five freestanding hospice houses and one additional leased inpatient hospice unit.

As the next phase of this partnership, the Kobacker House Foundation, Ohio’s Hospice, and The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center intend to collaborate on a variety of initiatives to support patients and families needing hospice and end-of-life care, including exploring the feasibility of developing a new, state-of-the-art, freestanding Kobacker House in Columbus – a dedicated facility designed from the ground up to embody The Kobacker Way in every detail.

“For 35 years our family has held one conviction above all: how a community cares for its dying is the truest measure of its soul,” said Alfred Kobacker, Founder of the Kobacker House Foundation. “This legacy has always been shaped not only by philanthropy, but by the compassion of volunteers – exemplified by my cousin, Cathe Kobacker, whose service helped define the spirit of Kobacker House from its earliest days. Through this collaboration with Ohio’s Hospice and Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, that tradition of hands-on, heart-led care will continue for generations to come and expand beyond central Ohio.”

Alfred Kobacker, with his father and mother, Arthur and Sara Jo Kobacker, founded Kobacker House and is a second-generation steward of the family’s hospice legacy in central Ohio. He helped shepherd the original 1989 inpatient hospice into being and later served as the honorary chair of the community campaign that funded the Kobacker House.

“Ohio’s Hospice has served Ohio families with mission-driven care for decades across more than fifty counties through our affiliate partners and dedicated hospice houses,” said Ohio’s Hospice CEO Kent Anderson. “We are profoundly honored to welcome the Kobacker House legacy into our family and build upon our strong long-standing collaboration with Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. The Kobacker Way will now guide superior, nonprofit hospice care for Ohio patients and families, and serve as a moral beacon for everything we do statewide.”

“The Kobacker family and their passion for this field have been critical to redefining the mission of compassionate care at the end of life in our community,” said John J. Warner, MD, CEO of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and executive vice president at Ohio State. “Our collaboration with Ohio’s Hospice over nearly a decade has been outstanding. The addition of the Kobacker House Foundation will further advance our commitment to providing a continuum of world-class care, including compassionate end-of-life support. We look forward to helping to expand this model across Ohio and beyond.”
